Leonard graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1987 from the University of British Columbia and joined the Bar the following year.
For over 30 years, Leonard’s practice has focused on civil and criminal litigation with extensive trial experience. He typically conducts several trials per year.
Leonard has acted as Agent for the Attorney General of Canada conducting Federal Prosecutions in the Metro Vancouver area, and has acted as Provincial Crown Counsel with the Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions group as well as ad hoc Provincial Crown Counsel in the Fraser region. For Personal Injury cases, he conducted plaintiff personal injury and insurance (ICBC) defence trials.
Leonard has appeared in the Provincial Court of British Columbia, Supreme Court of British Columbia, British Columbia Court of Appeal, Federal Court of Canada, and the Federal Court of Appeal. He has conducted numerous Jury Trials and has appeared before a variety of Administrative Tribunals such as the Immigration and Refugee Board and the BC Human Rights Tribunal.
At the Deer Lake Law Group, Leonard continues his practice as Criminal Defence counsel, as well as Personal Injury / ICBC and Family Law trial lawyer. He prides himself on properly analyzing his client’s circumstances and developing an appropriate and reasonable solution. He has extensive experience in negotiating legal disputes, but if matters cannot be resolved by agreement, he relies on his considerable litigation skills to vigourously advocate his client’s position. Leonard has developed a reputation for his courtroom tenacity.
As part of his legal professional development, Leonard is working towards his Diploma in Mediation and Conflict Resolution through the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
In his free time Leonard is a talented amateur chef who entertains his wife Sheila with creative culinary delights.
